April 10th 2020 | … and after 48 years living in Hong Kong I have earned the right to say this, again.

My view on the Coronavirus | Covid - 19

Not for a moment is this blog post meant to be even remotely funny, the Coronavrius Pandemic is no laughing matter but I am going to briefly tell you what’s on my mind.

But first some context,

I am a nobody, always have been and always will be, I am one nobody out of 7.8 BILLION people on this planet, what I say matters not one jot, my thoughts, comments, ideas, whatever are totally inconsequential so who gives a sausage right?

I stared death in the face in 2016 after a massive heart attack, I had an extra 2 weeks in Hospital at the time because I had pneumonia, I am also Insulin dependent being a full on diabetic for decades, according to every article out there I am more than likely to die if I get Covid - 19, being 59 and having a couple of major underlying health conditions.

…but so what, I am one nobody

.. and a little more context

I restrict my news about what is going on to the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, The Guardian Newspaper in the UK and the BBC World site and I read the news twice a day, if I need additional information I use GOOGLE. I do not read any news on Facebook or Instagram or any other type of social media but I have been known to watch some funny video clips sent to me by friends and family on Whatsapp that show people dealing with the crisis.

I went through the SARS Crisis in Hong Kong in 2003, the entire episode, in fact I have been through crisis after crisis since 1961 starting with the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962.

  • The population of the world on April 10th 2020 was 7.8 BILLION people

  • The population of Hong Kong on April 10th 2020 was 7.5 MILLION people

  • so far in 2020 over 16 million people have died worldwide, an average of roughly 161,000 people per day.

  • On average 50,000 people per year die in Hong Kong or roughly 137 people per day

  • The current number of Covid - 19 cases in Hong Kong is under 1,000 people with 4 deaths

  • The numbers for SARS in Hong Kong in 2003 was around 1,850 infections and 299 deaths

  • The Hong Kong Government recently announced that the 2020 Flu season is over with just 119 deaths (it was 356 in 2019)

  • Hong Kong is continually under threat from Flu, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, Covid - 19, SARS like viruses etc

  • WHO publishes guidelines that say every year there are between 250,000 to 500,000 deaths worldwide because of the Flu

  • Let’s be clear, the Flu is a Coronavirus like Covid - 19

  • and I absolutely know that we need a vaccine to make Covid - 19 manageable in the future, like the Flu vaccine and bear in mind all those deaths from Flu are despite the fact that there is a Flu vaccine

  • Under 1,000 infections in Hong Kong, virtually all the infected people are Hong Kong Chinese, they got infected despite wearing masks pretty much all the time

That;s the context.

Honestly I am sick and tired of the overwhelming and I mean overwhelming number of negative and hysterical articles from my 3 news sources every single day, I am not kidding, after a while you get totally numb to what’s going on, the one thing that is crystal clear is that every article seems to be proposing a Doomsday | 28 Days Later | Armageddon scenario - the American Government has run out of words to describe their horrible situation… Every scientist out there is proposing a similar end of the world scenario based on theoretical computer models and there seems to be a new scientist popping out of the woodwork every 10 minutes or so with a new horrific number of deaths calculation, the scientists contradict each other, the politicians contradict each other, it has become impossible to believe anything, anymore, it is awfully depressing and probably is done so that we take the threat seriously but at what cost to your mental health??

.. and basically, there is very little leadership out there from some very powerful politicians which is just making a horrible situation worse, much worse.

… and in the meantime my own little world is going down the toilet and there is nothing I can do about it.

There was an article this afternoon in the South China Morning Post on a positive note that the rate of infections was dropping rapidly and within minutes we are getting quotes from scientists and politicians in Hong Kong on how, “yes, but, we are looking at a 3rd wave of infections that will send us back to the Stone Age!”

Hong Konger’s response to Scientists in Hong Kong suggestion a 3rd wave of the killer virus, mask free and down at the beach at Repulse Bay April 10th 2020 - lock down is driving people crazy.

I happen to think the Hong Kong Government has done a good job overall, not great, but good despite being criticised at every turn but I am worried, let’s for arguments sake say that we get back to normal within the next 4 - 6 weeks, what happens if we get reports of a couple of new infections in 3 months time, is Hong Kong going to be locked down again for months on end? and then in 6 months time??? how on earth can society function.

At this point, I would rather kill Zombies.

… oh and back to the image of Nathan Road… it is one of the busiest roads in Hong Kong and normally jammed with people and vehicles, it should not look like this! it is a very odd feeling.

April 10th 2020 | Not only will it keep out virus particles it will also keep out Zombies

…. after my oped above it is all downhill, I mean seriously, what do I know, I’m just a tour guide… I was amused to see that the MTR (Subway Company) is not taking any chances with Covid - 19, they have, using gaffer tape, increased the height of the “glass panels” to about 5ft in height to protect the staff from sneezes and such and they now all wear surgical gloves as well as a mask, never mind a virus those panels could repel a zombie at least until help arrived.

What’s the point of taking your temperature?

April 10th 2020 | Just going into the Chungking Mansions is hazardous to your health

What exactly happens if you have a high temperature and you want to step into the Peninsula Hotel for lunch… yep a lot of buildings in Hong Kong now temperature screen you at the door before letting you in the building.

There are probably countless diseases out there that can give you a high temperature?

I am guessing that they will probably not let you in and then spread on Social Media that Mr. and Mrs, Famous Billionaire have the virus..

I have been through this process frequently, I am not a Zombie (which probably has a fever so high it could start a bush fire) but I am a Vampire, my temperature is not normal, it is below normal!!

I was really amused yesterday when I went from the Peninsula Hotel to the Chungking Mansions (both are on Nathan Road) and lo and behold a temperature check at the Mansions, I actually had a WTF moment, let;s just say that if Zombies were real, they would stay at the Chungking Mansions for US$25 per night. - it is an anything goes building!, heaven knows what diseases lurk in that building.

April 10th 2020 | … it must be bad if the Chungking Mansions is empty

It would appear that the temperature check at the Chungking Mansions has thinned out the number of people in there, it was dead in there, you can see in the top image, virtually no one and this was at lunchtime.. the image in black and white is typical for the crowds that normally swarm in there.

Trust me, there are many entrances into the building, any sick person could easily get in there despite them trying to funnel you through the main front entrance.

I have never seen it so empty

Hong Konger’s reclaim the Avenue of Stars

© Jamie Lloyd | J3 Private Tours Hong Kong | 2011 - 2020. All rights reserved. Click on the image to enlarge to full screen

April 10th 2020 | normally tens of thousands of Mainland Chinese Tourists walk the Avenue of Stars daily

Things are getting better in some respects for Hong Konger’s who wanted Mainland Chinese people stopped from coming to Hong Kong, they represent 80% of all visitors coming to Hong Kong.

Well, they got their wish, with the Hong Kong border closed to all visitors now,

The Avenue of Stars down at the waterfront in Kowloon is a great place to chill out but not when there are tens of thousands of Chinese Tourists mobbing the place (this is NOT my opinion) and I have noted with interest that Hong Konger’s are now really enjoying the space at the Avenue of Star, that glorious view is a big draw.

It will be interesting to see if the Chinese Tourists return.
