I spend a lot of time at The Peak as we call it and Victoria Peak to everyone else! and I have a weird love affair with a spider that frightens the life out of most people in Hong Kong.
The Golden Orb spider is very common in jungles all over the World and is spread all over Hong Kong given that Hong Kong is green and rock.
No one in Hong Kong seems to be quite sure if it is poisonous or not, in places like the Amazon in South America they catch and eat birds, I have heard here that their bite is like a bee sting and you can get a nasty rash, who knows.... but one thing is certain it pays to be careful and the fright at seeing such a huge spider is more than enough.
Size... lets put it this way they can get as big as an adults hand, I have seen some huge ones at Victoria Peak and naturally these are the females, the males are about the size of a thumbnail and are red in colour and you will often see 2 or 3 males on the web vying for the females "love" and "affection", lets just say it ends badly for the male but at least it goes out on a high note.
I only see them in the summer months, typically from early June onwards.
They are very colorful, they seem to be black, red and yellow or just all black and their webs can get very, very big, a few years back on Lugard Road at the Peak I saw a web that was about 10 feet across and had 3 females on it, scary stuff.
